Family business sustainability: the impact of governance and women’s empowerment in Saudi Arabia

Due to their strong emotional interest and ownership control, family firm owners significantly influence their firm’s strategies and governance, which has consequences for their business sustainability practices. The failure to establish or maintain formal organizational structures, and adopt good governance principles, may hinder family firms in their pursuit of long-term sustainability. This study empirically investigated the impact of corporate governance on family firms’ sustainability, with women’s empowerment and culture as moderating and mediating factors, respectively. Data for the study were obtained from a sample of 126 family firms from Saudi Arabia. The study adopted the partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) method. The study results empirically confirmed that corporate governance is positively associated with women’s empowerment, which also assists in achieving business sustainability in family-controlled firms. The adoption of good corporate governance policies, and empowerment of women through their appointment on corporate boards operating in a supportive culture, can reinforce an organization’s mission, purpose and strategies, which can create an enabling environment for family business sustainability.

Predicting Psychological Well-being based on Mindfulness with Mediating Role of Coping Styles

Aim: Paying attention to the level of health and psychological well-being of students as the most important future-makers of the country is of great importance. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate and present a predictive model of their psychological well-being based on mindfulness mediated by coping styles. Methods: The method of this study was descriptive-correlational which was done by structural equation modeling method. The statistical population of the study included undergraduate students of Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran (Iran), three hundred sixty five of whom participated in the study through cluster sampling. In order to collect data, mindfulness, coping styles and psychological well-being questionnaires were used. The reliability and validity of the instruments were confirmed using Cronbach's alpha coefficient and confirmatory factor analysis. To analyze the data, structural equation method was used with Amos software. Findings: The results of this study showed that the effect of mindfulness on problem-oriented style and psychological well-being is significantly positive, but its effect on emotion-oriented style and avoidance style is significantly negative. The effect of problem-oriented style on psychological well-being is positive and significant, but the effect of emotion-oriented style and avoidance style on psychological well-being is not significant. Also, the mediating role of problem-oriented coping style about the effect of mindfulness on psychological well-being is significant. Conclusion: The results showed that the predictive model presented has a good fit and the variables of mindfulness and problem-oriented coping style are effective in psychological well-being.

Am I Safe at My Educational Place? Creating Secure and Sustainable Urban Learning Spaces Through Green Infrastructure and Ecological Education

Green infrastructure has become a critical part of society for environmental sustainability. Students studying in public urban spaces seem less satisfied with their living standards and environmental conditions. This research aims to determine the impact of perceived danger in urban public spaces, green infrastructure, and ecological education on student satisfaction. Additionally, this study considers the moderating effects of ecological education and green infrastructure. Data were collected from 350 students at public schools and colleges. The Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method was used for data analysis. The study found a significant direct relationship between perceived danger in urban public spaces, green infrastructure, ecological education, and student satisfaction. Moreover, the moderating effects of green infrastructure and ecological education are significant in increasing student satisfaction. This research is based on a novel idea and contributes a newly developed model to the body of knowledge on student satisfaction and ecological education. The research has both theoretical and practical implications for improving student satisfaction through ecological education and green infrastructure. The limitations of this research are described, along with future directions to guide researchers in their future studies.

Exploring the Moderating Effect of Generational Status on the Link Between External Environment and Entrepreneurial Motivation of Indian Women Entrepreneurs

This study examines how external environmental factors affect the motivation of first- and second-generation women entrepreneurs in India, and how their generational status moderates this relationship. We used a survey design method to collect data from 459 women business owners in India, who were classified as first- or second-generation based on whether they were the first or second generation in their family to start a business. We employed the partial least-squares structural equation modelling method to test our hypotheses and evaluate our model. We found that external environmental factors, such as education and training, financial support, government policies and non-financial support, had positive effects on entrepreneurial motivation for both groups of women entrepreneurs. However, we also found that generational status had a significant moderating effect on the link between education and training and entrepreneurial motivation, but not on the other three external environmental factors. Specifically, we found that education and training influenced second-generation women entrepreneurs more strongly than first-generation women entrepreneurs. Our findings have important implications for management practice and policymaking, as well as for the literature on women entrepreneurship. We suggest that concerned authorities should develop differential strategies for first- and second-generation women entrepreneurs, taking into account their different responses to external environmental factors. We also suggest that future research should explore other internal and external environmental factors that might interact with generational status or other variables to shape women entrepreneurs’ motivation.

Research on the impact of management control on corporate social responsibility and business performance—The case of listed companies in Vietnam

Purpose: There have been many studies on corporate social responsibility. Still, research on the dual relationship showing the impact of management control on corporate social responsibility and business performance has not been exciting researchers. The article also identifies and measures the elements of management control that affect compliance with corporate social responsibility and business performance. At the same time, the paper also analyzes the influence of compliance with corporate social responsibility on business performance. From the research results, listed companies will see the importance of designing management control and complying with corporate social responsibility to maximize the business’s profits. Findings: The article demonstrates the practicality of institutional theory in the relationship between management control, corporate social responsibility, and business performance. Institutional theory influences the relationship between management control, CSR, and business performance by highlighting the role of external institutional pressures, legitimacy, and conformity to societal norms. Companies that strategically integrate institutional expectations into their management control systems can enhance their CSR efforts, improve their reputation, and contribute to better business performance. Methodology: We collect data on 195 manufacturing enterprises listed on the Vietnam stock market in 6 sectors. This study’s main data analysis method is the structural equation modeling method (SEM). The article used AMOS software to evaluate and measure the influence of each factor. Practical implications: The article has analyzed five aspects of management control to corporate social responsibility and business performance: Size of the Board of Directors (BOD), percentage of independent members in the BOD, and concurrence. CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors, state ownership ratio and foreign shareholder ownership rate. The results show that a company with a CEO who is not the Chairman of the BOD will have a higher level of CSR compliance than a company with a CEO who is also the Chairman of the BOD. The larger the Board size, the higher the level of CSR, but This has not been verified for the company’s business performance. The higher the foreign ownership ratio, the better the CSR compliance; however, this has the opposite direction for the state ownership rate. The higher the percentage of independent members on the Board of Directors, the lower the level of CSR compliance. In terms of impact on business performance in the enterprise: The higher the company’s compliance with corporate social responsibility, the better it’s business performance. A company with a CEO who holds the position of BOD will have lower business performance than companies with a CEO who does not hold the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors. Companies with a high percentage of state ownership will have lower business performance. The higher the percentage of independent members on the Board of Directors, the lower the business performance. Generation Z's Decision to Use QRIS in Mataram City: UTAUT Model

In Mataram City, West Nusa Tenggara, this study employs the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) paradigm to investigate the factors influencing Generation Z's adoption of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS). Using the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method, 128 participants were included in a quantitative analysis to examine how performance expectations, effort expectations, social influences, and facilitating conditions affect behavior and intentions when using QRIS. The findings indicate that performance expectancies, social influences, and environmental factors all have a significant impact on behavioral intentions, even when effort expectancies do not directly affect them. Furthermore, a noteworthy correlation was also observed among QRIS use, behavioral intents, and enabling situations. These results emphasize how crucial it is to address issues like social influence, performance expectations, and other motivators in order to promote Generation Z's adoption of QRIS in Mataram City and bolster Indonesia's digital payments ecosystem.

Sustainable new product development based on innovative product opportunity gap for a waste to energy system: pistachio packaging

Purpose This study aims to perform innovation analysis for a product based on market, design and process dimensions. This integrated approach provides sustainability for product design and development. Design/methodology/approach A significant aspect of innovation is investigated to provide energy from the wastes collected in the reverse chain. First, the indicators related to the product opportunity gap were collected and ranked by the structural equation modeling (SEM) method. Indicators with a factor loading above 0.6 are selected and inserted into the proposed mathematical model. The proposed mathematical model was implemented in GAMS 28.2.0 to maximize energy production from waste and minimize the cost of product innovation. A case study on pistachio new packaging process innovation is investigated. Findings The results showed that in today’s competitive world where sustainability and the environment are important, the index of converting waste into energy is one of the main indicators of innovation. Consequently, flammability is extracted from the mathematical model as one of the most significant indicators leading to higher energy production with the lowest innovation cost. Originality/value New product development (NPD) is significant to sustain market share and satisfy customer needs. Different approaches are proposed to handle NPD, mostly focusing on the customer and design requirements.

Background: Hospitals play a vital role in delivering healthcare services to the community, yet they encounter challenges affecting employee productivity, notably presenteeism—when employees are physically present at work despite health issues. Objectives: The research aims to look at the factors that influence the formation of presenteeism in hospital medical personnel Methods: The use of the structural equation model method was applied in this research using all nursing staff as the analysis unit at the National Brain Hospital. Prof. Dr. Mahar Mardjono, Jakarta Indonesia. Data collection used a survey compiled from indicators of the variables studied Results: From the results of data processing, it was found that presenteeism is influenced by employee job satisfaction, affective commitment, and organizational support both directly and indirectly. Even organizational support mediates the relationship between job satisfaction and presenteeism. These results indicate that presenteeism can be formed from three research variables, namely employee satisfaction, affective commitment and organizational support Implications: Research findings can be used by hospital management as an instrument for formulating strategies to develop presenteeism that has a positive impact and reduce the negative impact of the presence of presenteeism among hospital medical personnel.

Structural Equation Modeling in Technology Adoption and Use in the Construction Industry: A Scientometric Analysis and Qualitative Review

Considering the emergence and adoption of various innovative technologies, the construction industry has undergone transformation into a more secure, highly efficient, and ecologically sustainable landscape. An increasing number of studies uses the structural equation modeling (SEM) method to explore the dynamics of technology adoption and use within the construction sector. Previous studies have mainly focused on qualitative analysis using the SEM method to analyze technology adoption and usage in the construction industry. This study, however, distinguishes itself from previous research by focusing on the SEM method itself and conducting a systematic analysis using scientometric methods. Based on a total of 140 relevant journal articles, this study adopts a scientometric analysis approach to conduct a holistic review encompassing sources, researchers, keywords, and highly cited documents. The research findings are as follows: (1) the primary focus of the current research topics is on BIM technology; (2) most studies employ cross-sectional SEM instead of longitudinal SEM; (3) there is a deficiency in the theoretical foundation for designing SEM in current research; and (4) the selection of either reflective or formative measures lacks sufficient rigor. Qualitative analysis is used to examine prevailing issues in research design and address the intricate technicalities and potential challenges inherent in the SEM method. Three research gaps and future directions are presented: diversifying regions of study and research topics, incorporating theoretical support for research design, and carefully choosing reflective or formative measures. The findings provide a comprehensive roadmap and valuable reference for future research in this field.

THE EFFECT OF WORK-RELATED SOCIAL MEDIA USE AND PERCEIVED ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT ON WORK ENGAGEMENT

This study examined how different factors can influence employees' work engagement. Work-related social media use outside working hours can be a paradox with negative implications for work engagement. Perceived organizational support can be a boost that positively impacts work engagement. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 344 employees across sectors in the greater Jakarta area to test the research hypothesis. The collected data is then processed using the structural equation modeling (SEM) method. The findings in this study indicate that work-related social media use and perceived organizational support are proven to significantly affect work engagement through the mediating role of organizational identification, work-to-family conflict, and family-to-work conflict. The results of this study are expected to be taken into consideration by organizations in formulating policies on setting balanced working hours, maximizing the role of organizational support, and minimizing the potential for work-family conflict so that employees can feel a strong sense of work engagement and maximize their contribution to the organization in the digital era.

Assessing actual usage and satisfaction factors of Microsoft Teams in online learning

This study examines the factors influencing students’ online learning using Microsoft Teams at the PLN Institute of Technology. Using primary data from 301 students, the study found that the use of Microsoft Teams improved student achievement and learning performance during the pandemic. The structural equation model (SEM) method tested the model with low validity, with all variables having an AVE value more than 0.5 and higher than the cross-loading factor valid, the outer model analysis demonstrated good convergent validity. Dependability and trustworthiness were shown by the composite reliability rating, which was over 0.70. Both perceived usefulness (PU) and perceived ease of use (PEOU) were shown to have a strong correlation, and the inner model analysis revealed positive path coefficient values without any weak variables. These results supported by hypothesis testing imply that lecturers can modify their curricula to enhance student performance in the event of a pandemic. There was shown to exist a strong relationship between the perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness.

Gender and race measurement invariance of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire in a U.S. base sample

IntroductionThe Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is one the most widely used behavior screening tools for public schools due to its strong psychometric properties, low cost, and brief (25-question) format. However, this screening tool has several limitations including being primarily developed for the purposes of identifying clinical diagnostic conditions and primarily in a European population. To date, there has been minimal comparative research on measurement invariance in relationship to important U.S. socio-demographic metrics such as race and gender.MethodThis study utilized both structural equation modeling (i.e., confirmatory factor analysis) and item response theory (IRT) methods to investigate the measurement invariance of the SDQ across gender (male, female) and race (Black, White). CFA analyses were first conducted for each of the SDQ subscales to identify potential misfit in loadings, thresholds, and residuals. IRT-graded response models were then conducted to identify and quantify the between-group differences at the item and factor levels in terms of Cohen's d styled metrics (d > 0.2 = small, d > 0.5 = medium, d > 8 = large).ResultsThere were 2,821 high school participants (52% Male, 48% Female; 88% Black, 12% White) included in these analyses. CFA analyses suggested that the item-factor relationship for most subscales were invariant, but the Conduct Problems and Hyperactivity subscales were non-invariant for strict measurement invariance. IRT analyses identified several invariant items ranging from small to large. Despite moderate to large effects for item scores on several scales, the test-level effects on scale scores were negligible.DiscussionThese analyses suggest that the SDQ subscale scores display reasonable comparable item-factor relationships across groups. Several subscale item scores displayed substantive item-level misfit, but the test level effects were minimal. Implications for the field are discussed.

Contribution of Planning, IT Based Communication, Implementation and Follow Up Supervision in Elementary Schools

The quality of learning is expected to continue to improve, but supervision management continues to decline. This research aims to identify strategic factors involved in implementing supervision at the elementary school level. Quantitative methods were applied in this research using a census design, where 250 teachers were asked to fill out a questionnaire via the Google Form platform. However, because some teachers were unfamiliar with technology, only 213 teachers responded. The collected data was then analyzed using the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) method. Assessment of Impact of Country Business Ranking on Economi c Development: An Empirical Analysis

Purpose: The World Bank's “Ease of Doing Business” index, among other business rankings, can help a country's economic progress by attracting foreign investments, encouraging entrepreneurship, and improving the business climate. Superior rankings indicate an optimised environment for business activities, which could boost investments, job opportunities, and overall economic growth. The research is conducted to assess the impact of a country's business ranking on economic development. Design/methodology/approach: The Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) method was used to assess the impact of a country's business ranking on its economic trajectory. The official World Bank report was used to obtain data from 2015 to 2021. Panel data of Global Innovation Ranking, Ease of Doing Business Ranking, and Business Freedom Ranking from 2016 to 2021 is the basis of this study. The researcher has used a conceptual framework to establish and understand the dependence among the dependent and independent variables. For measuring statistical association, the researcher has used structural equation modelling and path diagram along with correlation and regression analysis. The correlation has been used to assess their association, while the researcher has used regression to determine the impact of country business ranking. Findings: The investigator investigated the impact of India's standings in the Global Innovation Ranking, Ease of Doing Business Ranking, and Business Freedom Ranking on its Economic Development, specifically GDP, in this study. The study's findings show that India's business rankings have a significant impact on its economic development. Such global business rankings provide critical data points for policymakers, businesses, and investors to make informed decisions, thereby promoting economic growth. Furthermore, the study examined the effects of GDP growth on the combustion of fossil fuels, as measured in million tonnes, emphasising the environmental consequences of economic expansion. Research limitations/implications: It's imperative to note that this is just an estimate, and the actual relationship between the variables in the population may differ from this estimate. The estimate is based on the sample data used to fit the model and may not accurately reflect the true relationship in the population. Further analysis and interpretation of the model's goodness of fit and consideration of other factors, such as outliers or omitted variables, are essential to fully apprehend the relationship between “GIR” and the dependent variable. The results of global business rankings can help policymakers identify areas for improvement in their country's business environment. By focusing on the areas where their country is lagging behind, they can develop policies and initiatives to attract more investment, create a more favourable business environment, and support economic growth. Businesses can use the results of global rankings to evaluate potential locations for expansion or investment. It can provide insights into the ease of starting and running a business, access to credit, property rights protection, and other important factors to businesses. Investors can also use the results of global rankings to make informed decisions about where increased investment and economic growth. Global business rankings generally provide valuable information that policymakers, businesses, and investors can use to make informed decisions and support economic development. Effect of architecture and efficiency of mobile banking application on the intention to continue using Islamic bank: does data security matter?

Purpose This study aims to examine the effect of application architecture and application efficiency on the intention to continue using Islamic bank with data security as a moderator. The investigation was situated within the framework of a hacker attack that compromised the security of customer data at one of Indonesia’s largest Islamic bank. Design/methodology/approach A survey questionnaire method was used, and the sample population comprised users of Islamic bank in Indonesia. The respondents were then selected purposively with the criteria of individuals who were using mobile banking services. Furthermore, data collection in this study was carried out by distributing questionnaires online. To validate the questionnaire, consultation and validation were conducted by engaging four experts and conducting a pilot study. Hypothesis testing was performed using the structural equation modeling method based on partial least squares. Findings The results of the partial least square structural model assessment showed that application efficiency and data security positively influenced the intention to continue using Islamic bank, while application architecture had no effect. Furthermore, data security could not moderate the relationship between application architecture and efficiency toward the intention to continue using Islamic bank. Practical implications The results of this study suggested that Islamic banking practitioners must prioritize the enhancement of digital banking services, with a specific focus on improving application efficiency and ensuring robust data security. These two dimensions were critical determinants influencing the intention to continue using Islamic bank. Originality/value This study addressed the issue of data security as a moderator, particularly in the context of hacker attacks targeting a major Islamic bank in Indonesia. Furthermore, this current report expounded on the study conducted by Mir et al. (2022) by introducing novel dimensions to the e-service quality of internet banking.

Family religiosity and climate: the protective role of personal interiorized religiosity in deviance propensity among justice-involved juveniles.

According to the literature, religious commitment could be a protective factor against dangerous behaviors, such as criminal offending, unsafe sex, and substance use. Our study aims to investigate the influence of Family Religiosity and climate on anger dysregulation and deviance propensity in a sample of 214 justice-involved boys from Italian Youth Detention Centers (range 14-25). The sample was divided into religious (n = 102) and non-religious (n = 112) justice-involved juveniles. Participants filled in the following questionnaires: Deviant Behavior Questionnaire, Aggression Questionnaire, Family Communication Scale, Moral Disengagement Scale, and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. We used a partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS_SEM) method to build our model and we found that Family Religiosity was positively associated with Family Climate which was negatively associated with Anger Dysregulation and Deviance Propensity, and Anger Dysregulation was positively related to Deviance Propensity. The multigroup analysis confirmed that for justice-involved juveniles who interiorized religious discipline and beliefs, Family Religiosity showed a positive association with Family Climate, which had a negative relationship with Anger Dysregulation, which strongly predicted Deviance Propensity. This result could be useful to promote new development goals and preventive activities and interventions based on positive religiosity values in juveniles' behavior.

Indirect effects of revegetation dominate groundwater recharge change at the basin scale

Attribution of groundwater recharge (GR) change is important for understanding subsurface hydrological processes and managing regional groundwater resources. Despite vegetation change directly influencing GR, its indirect effects are mostly incorporated into other effects because of multicollinearity in environmental factors. Taking the 59 hydrological stations from 13 basins in the Loess Plateau of China as an example, GR was estimated with daily streamflow data and recession-curve-displacement method for 1961–2019. Geographical detector was employed to qualitatively attribute the spatial variability of GR, while structural equation modeling and elasticity coefficient method were utilized for qualitative and quantitative analysis of the direct and indirect impacts of environmental factors on the temporal variation of GR. The annual mean GR in 13 basins ranged from 11 to 53 mm/year, and the spatial heterogeneity of GR can be well explained by loess thickness. GR significantly decreased in 68% of hydrological stations by 38% ± 15%. Averaged over the 13 basins, the direct and indirect effects of NDVI change respectively accounted for 10% and 48% of GR reduction, which greatly exceeded other factors. The indirect effects of vegetation change dominated GR change, but they were getting smaller with increasing latitude. This study highlights the importance in considering indirect effects of vegetation change in hydrological variability, and the results can improve the understanding of hydrological variability.

Antecedents of Viewers Engagement

The purpose of this study is to analyze the antecedents of viewers engagement from social media influencers specifically in relation to YouTube channels, which include feelings of escape, self-improvement, fun, glamourous, connectivity from the audience as well as Overall Perceived image of the influencer. The sample design used in this research is non-probability sampling with purposive sampling technique. The processed data came from 280 respondents and then the data was analyzed using the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) method. The results of this study indicate that there is a positive influence of escape on fun, there is a positive influence of self improvement on fun, glamorous and connectivity, there is also a positive influence of fun, glamorous and connectivity on overall perceived image and there is a positive influence of overall perceived image on viewers engagement. Likewise, this study found that there is no positive effect of escape on glamorous and connectivity. In general, the results of this study show that fun, glamorous and connectivity, and overall perceived image are important factors that influence viewers engagement. Content that has a positive, authentic and informative overall image tends to attract more attention and is easily understood by viewers. Suggestions for future research, researchers can conduct research on Indonesian youtuber objects that are not included in this study and overseas youtuber objects. and can also conduct research on the impact of escape and self improvement on viewers engagement by adding job occupation variables as moderators.

An Empirical Study on the Relationship between Internalization and Externalization of Chinese Wushu Tacit Knowledge Transfer

In view of the unclear relationship between internalization and externalization of current martial arts knowledge, and the unclear interaction mechanism, this study firstly analyzes the master-apprentice model of martial arts dissemination, and then uses the questionnaire survey method, factor analysis method and structural equation model method to discuss The relationship between master-apprentice relationship, master’s ability to transmit knowledge, apprentice’s ability to receive knowledge, organizational culture and its characteristics, and the relationship between the tacit degree of martial arts knowledge and the internalization and externalization effects of tacit knowledge transfer, the internalization effect of martial arts tacit knowledge is obtained with influence on externalizing effects. The conclusion is that in the process of Wushu tacit knowledge transfer, the degree of internalization of tacit knowledge has a positive impact on the degree of externalization, and it is also affected by the master’s ability to send knowledge, the apprentice’s ability to accept knowledge, and the transfer environment.
